IT Winds of Change - Posted 6/26/2008
I do not believe in revolutionary change.  At least not for IT.  I don’t believe that something is going to jump up and sweep across the land like a blazing wildfire, remaking the landscape as it goes.  But I do believe there are forces at work today, forces that may take years and which some of us may not even be aware of now, that are going to radically alter much that we take for granted in the ‘i’ world.  (read more and comment)

Application Modernization - Whatever - Posted 6/10/2008
OK, I’ll admit it.  I’m a bit grouchy tonight.

Oh, I know what you’re thinking.  Dave, you’re so funny, so friendly, how could you possibly be grumpy?  Truth is, I’m not really all that funny and friendly.  I’m cynical and sarcastic.  Passes for humor much of the time, but the mental state that produces it is quite a bit different.  My basic problem is a common one, and in this day and age when everyone is open and honest about their disabilities I might as well just come out with it – my name is Dave Shirey and I’m a Grouch.  Not all the time, of course.  Generally it’s a morning problem and after I have a cup of tea and yell at someone I usually settle right down.  (read more and comment)

V6R1 Upgrade Conversion Information - Posted 3/10/2008
By now you have probably heard that the next release of i5/OS is out and about (GA on March 7).  And you have also probably heard that V6R1 requires a program conversion step.  But you may not have heard why the conversion is necessary or what is involved in doing it.  Well, keep reading and I will tell you. SOA - Uh, What I Really Meant Was . . . - Posted 9/12/2007
About a month ago, maybe a bit more, I wrote a blog entry on SOA; Service Oriented Architecture.  I have had many sleepless nights since then because in reading back over that article I see that I was actually pretty positive about SOA.

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, except for the fact that I am, as I have admitted a number of times, a cynical idealist, and my experience has been that anytime I am more or less positive about anything that can’t be eaten with a marinara sauce or drunk with crushed ice, that I am wrong.  So I have been thinking about SOA again, trying to decide if what I said was really true or if I was carried away in the moment.   And I guess I have come to a couple of conclusions. (read more and comment)

i5/OS - A Release is Not Forever - Posted 8/1/2007
Yes, those were the days.  The days when you could just find a version of OS/400 (now i5/OS) that you really liked and sit on it.   From the point of view of your ERP system it really didn’t matter.  As long as the release ran RPG you were good to go.  But now, that seems to be changing. SOA - Maybe It Doesn't Stink After All - Posted 7/10/2007
If you have read any of my blog posts you probably have gathered that I am a bit old school.  I am, as advertised, a cynical idealist.  I like the idea of a new idea but it generally takes some work to convince me it’s a good idea.  Sorry, but when you get to a certain point in your life it’s easy to say ‘been there, done that’.

And that certainly seemed to be the case with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).  (read more and comment)

PHP or RPGIII? - Posted 6/12/2007
OK, here’s a question for you.  Yeah, that’s right.  You.  Have you taken a look at a copy of System iNews lately?  No, that’s not the question.  Just hang in there with me for a few minutes.  Have you taken a look at a copy of System iNews lately?  It’s interesting.  Every article is about developing web enabled systems using PHP or using the IFS from RPG programs, or customizing the SQL query engine or what not.   It’s like in the last year we’ve gone from doing RPG IV stuff to all this other technology.  You hardly even see any articles about ILE anymore, it’s too passé.     (read more and comment)
